BIA receives new crime scene investigation technology

One of the goals of crime investigation is to preserve everything at the scene in as pristine a condition as possible.

But what if the scene is outdoors and a storm blows in during the investigation changing it with wind and precipitation? Or, new information becomes available weeks or years after investigators have left and the original scene has been cleaned and changed?

A new scanner will allow Montana investigators with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services to virtually preserve crime scenes just as they were first found.

The scanner, made by the Swiss company Leica, can quickly and thoroughly scan a crime scene and convert the data into 3-D computer generated images that preserve a scene forever.

The equipment will help BIA law enforcement fulfill its mission to successfully prosecute crimes, said Matthew Pryor, special agent in charge of the BIA Office of Justice Services District 5 based in Billings. The agency is driven to provide the best-available service to the people who live in Indian Country, especially crime victims, Pryor said.
