Tougher seat belt law shot down
The Montana Senate killed a bill Thursday that would have allowed police officers to stop and charge drivers with a crime for not wearing their seat belt.
Senate Bill 237, by Sen. Dave Lewis, R-Helena, failed 25-25 on its final Senate vote - after passing 25-24 on Wednesday.
“I'm saddened,” Lewis said afterward. “I believe that people will die over the next few years because we didn't pass this bill.”
Lewis said he won't seek to revive the bill, which met the same fate as numerous other so-called primary seat belt bills have at the Montana Legislature.
